The 2020 Initiative December 2011 Update
Beds and Bars is currently supporting the 2020 initiative, providing internships for young people with troubled histories. The project was put in place at the Beds and Bars operations in Paris – namely the St Christopher’s Inn backpacker hostel and La Rotonde - bar, brasserie, and business centre.
In December 2011 the team in Paris welcomed eight teenage interns from a local high school, aged between 15 and 17. They spent eight, half days in eight different areas of the business, taking turns to master and complete the duties associated with each.
On an individual basis, they discovered several aspects of the business and gained an understanding of the bigger picture. They worked in the hostel reception, kitchen, and book keeping areas, and the kitchen, sales, marketing, and accounts departments of La Rotonde.
Given the struggle faced by these teenagers when trying to complete school, their integration in Paris was a big challenge. It all began with a conversation about hospitality and how the customer comes first. The teenagers then visited all parts of the business for familiarisation. It was stressed that this is probably the only industry where everyone, even without a diploma, gets a chance and can progress quickly.
The interns turned up every day - on time and properly dressed. They always got involved and were willing to go the extra mile. Prior to this the majority of the group had no idea what career they wanted to pursue, but after the experience four wanted to work in hospitality. Another two raved about accounts and sales.
This was a great success for the interns and our team. We achieved something for the local community and hopefully nudged potential new staff members, toward our business in the future. The next step will be to work with a slightly older group for a longer period of time – focusing on those who have already decided to pursue a career in the industry.
