PubAid to host annual World’s Biggest Pub Quiz in May 2022

PubAid and its charity partner Shelter will run its annual World’s Biggest Pub Quiz from 9-15 May 2022.

Each year since 2016, except 2021 due to Covid, PubAid has organised a nationwide pub quiz to raise money for hundreds of charities and local causes. The quiz is completely free for pubs to run and has raised £750,000 in total for charities since its launch.

Money raised in the World’s Biggest Pub Quiz 2022 will help Shelter give information, advice and support to those facing homelessness as, currently, 91 families become homeless in England every day.

PubAid founder Des O’Flanagan said: “We’re delighted to be back after Covid forced us to cancel the Quiz in 2021. Shelter’s work with people facing homelessness has never been more important, so we’re confident there will be widespread support for the charity among pubgoers.

“We took the opportunity during our time out to explore ways of ways of refreshing the quiz and we’re pleased to be working with Kwizzbit, which allows licensees to host a traditional, fun pub quiz on their smartphone, with technology making it easier to run and offering features that make it more engaging for customers and drive greater footfall into the pub.”

Beds and Bars’ CEO Keith Knowles and Tim Sykes, formerly of Beds and Bars, co-founded PubAid with Des O’Flanagan in 2009. Since then, Beds and Bars has endeavoured to support in any way possible.

O’Flanagan said: “We’re grateful to all our supporters for their financial and in-kind help. Beds and Bars have provided invaluable support over many years and last year created a new website, which is a vital tool in helping us to achieve our ambition of promoting pubs as a force for good in their communities.”

Around 1,500 pubs took part in the World’s Biggest Pub Quiz in 2019, but PubAid is hoping for a record number of participating pubs in May 2022.

Keith Knowles, Beds and Bars CEO, said: “I was always acutely aware that the work of my fellow pub operators and the pub industry was not understood or valued, in particular by the government. I set about with others to form PubAid so that greater value could be given to the work that pubs do both within local communities and nationally, including the funding of countless charities. Pubs raise well over £100m every year for charities and provide £40m in support to grassroots sport through various engaging fundraising activities. PubAid’s mission is to shine a light on the good of the industry and its charitable works.”

Pubs are encouraged to host the quiz in aid of Shelter, but have the freedom to support another charity, or divide funds raised between Shelter and a cause closer to home.

Max Newton, Head of Community Fundraising at Shelter, said: “Everyone at Shelter is absolutely thrilled to be partnering with the World’s Biggest Pub Quiz. We’re looking forward to communities across the country coming together in their local pub to have fun and quiz. The money they raise will help us be there for anyone facing homelessness.”
